William Howard was educated in the common school and continued his studies at Bethel College. He enlisted in Company G
of the 22nd Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry. He was wounded and lost his arm in the Battle of Belmont. He taught
school after the war for several years before entering politics where he was elected County Clerk for two terms. Later he was
a Justice of the Peace. He owned and operated a Hotel in Huntingdon for many years. During an eight year period in his life,
he served as the Mayor of Huntingdon.
Beverly was the grand daughter of R.E.C. Dougherty of McLeonoresville, in whose home, Carroll County was established.
Joella Newton, the Major's second wife was formerly married to Joe Waldrup.
