When Woodrow left his home in Lafayette County, MS., after graduating from High School, he followed his older cousin
into Mrs. Emma Hall's Boarding House in Memphis. He eventually fell in love with the land-lady's daughter, and when she
reached the age of 17, they were married. Woodrow was in the construction business until WWII erupted when he joined
the US Navy and became a parachute rigger. During the next four years they were either at the base in Corpus Christi, TX.
or at Lakehurst, NJ.. Mary and Spot, one of the world's smartest Curs, managed to keep the home fires burning in their
mobil home nearby.
During the war years, Woodrow agreed to the purchase of a home in Memphis with his mother-in-law the co-signer, a
commendable and remarkable gesture for a son-in-law. After their return in 1946, they lived for a while in their mobil home
before moving into the house with Emma and her boarders. Mary and Woodrow continued this arrangement for 14 years.
Woodrow decided not to return to the construction work and he made a remarkable transition into the life and casualty
insurance business. He was transfered to Greenwood in 1961 as District Manager of his insurance firm. Emma kept the
boarding house in Memphis for a year after Mary and Woodrow moved. She moved to Greenwood in 1963 where she re-
mained until her death in 1965.
Mary and Woodrow found Greenwood a natural habitat and dug in for keeps. He retired in 1981 and swears these are the
best years of his life. Mary enjoys her home and yard. They both love to travel. They are active members of the First
Baptist Church of Greenwood.
