John Thomas Eason served in the 17th Regiment of the Mississippi Volunteers, Company 1, from May 1861 to March 1865. He entered as a Private
, was promoted to Sargent in April 1862 and up the ranks in many major battles to Appomatux. Throughout his later years he was affectionately known as
"Captain Eason", an unconstituted fire-brand rebel. Not long before his death, he met another veteran in the train station; upon learning that he fought for
the "North" from Missouri ( a traitor of the worse kind), Captain Eason proceeded to whip the man on the spot. He had been a merchant and planter in
Coldwater, Tate County, MS, but decided to move to Fayetteville, Arkansas for health reasons and to educate his large family. In Fayeteville he established
the Eason Insurance Agency and he owned and operated the old Mountain Inn Hotel. At one time he served as Mayor of the City of Fayeteville.
